Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance (SCQF Level 8)

This award, endorsed by the Scottish FA and the Scottish Rugby Union, is certificated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and is delivered to full time professional trainee football and rugby players in Scotland. There are 9 mandatory units of study to be completed and these require the apprentice to study in more detail the technical, tactical, physical, psychological and lifestyle components of their chosen sporting pathway.

This is a specialist and unique qualification open to young people who are elite athletes and whose goal is to become a professional football or rugby player. This apprenticeship is endorsed by the Scottish FA, the Scottish Rugby Union and the participating professional football and rugby clubs in Scotland and provides apprentices with an excellent springboard to help them complete their pathway to a professional sporting career, but at the same time providing transferrable core skills that can open up opportunities for employment mobility across different industry sectors. Many of Scotland’s current and past international sporting heros in football and rugby have completed this qualification.

Active Leisure, Learning & Wellbeing (SCQF Level 5/6)

This apprenticeship framework provides an entry level pathway into the leisure industry and, with its flexible structure, caters for employers in a number of subsectors within sport & leisure and also makes a significant workforce contribution to the tourism industry.

Typical workplaces are:

  • Local authority leisure and private sport and leisure (sport centres, swimming pools, sports clubs, golf courses).
  • Stadia and arena (e.g. ice-rinks, athletics, cricket and football stadia).
  • Exercise & fitness (e.g. health and fitness clubs, hotel gyms).
  • Outdoor education, development training recreation & sport (e.g. outdoor education centres, activity camps).
  • Out of school centres, playwork centres and summer playschemes.
  • Sports development & administration.
  • Sports manufacturers, suppliers & retailers.
  • Caravan parks

This is a practical sector with the apprenticeship providing employees with employer-relevant workplace competence and skills, not just academic qualifications.

Leisure Management (SCQF Level 6/7)

This apprenticeship qualification is aimed at the same type of employer as the Active Leisure framework above but provides both a higher entry point into the industry and also a progression to HNC/HND, in house CPD and job promotion for the more gifted candidates. award is certificated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and delivered by the SFS team to the apprentice within the employer workplace. There are 9 units of study (5 mandatory and 4 optional) which will be assessed and completed against the MAs daily working responsibilities.

Typical employment opportunities include:

  • Personal Training – Local Government Leisure Centres, private fitness clubs.
  • Leisure Management – Sports centre management, disability inclusion training, pool lifeguard.
  • Outdoor Programmes – National coaching qualifications, community sports initiatives & sports leadership.
  • Playwork & Childcare – NPA Playwork and childcare, working with young people.

Evidence towards completing the award will be collected through a number of assessment practices however observation of the MA within the workplace is by far the most natural and efficient. Any employer within a sports, recreation or leisure vocation would be able to adopt this award for current staff or future new apprentices.
